چکیده

In this work, we investigate whether pseudo-haptic feedback is suitable for simulating torque feedback. Pseudohaptic feedback is based on the coupling of visual feedback and the internal resistance of an input device which passively reacts to the user’s applied force. An experiment was conducted to evaluate this feedback and compare isometric and elastic input devices. It involved compliance discrimination between real torsion springs and pseudo-haptic simulated torsion springs. Results show that torque haptic feedback was successfully simulated, with a difference in performance between device types. The elastic device yielded better resolution but higher subjective distortion of perception compared to the isometric device. Results are discussed on the basis of user answers, answer time, and

Pseudo-Haptic Feedback: Can Isometric Input Devices Simulate Force Feedback?

This paper considers whether a passive isometric input device, such as a , used together with visual feedback, could provide the operator with a pseudo-haptic feedback. For this aim, two psychophysical experiments have been conducted. The first experiment consisted of a compliance discrimination, between two virtual springs hand-operated by means of the . In this experiment, the stiffness (or c...

Elastic Force Feedback with a New Multi-finger Haptic Device: The DigiHaptic

This article presents a classification of and comparison between isotonic, isometric and elastic devices. It then introduces the DigiHaptic, a new three degrees of freedom multi-finger force feedback device, and its place in the device classification is proposed. Two notable features of the DigiHaptic are the decoupling of the degrees of freedom and the correlation between fingers and objects m...

Haptic Rendering for Under-Actuated 6/3-DOF Haptic Devices

Under-actuated 6/3-DOF haptic devices are mostly used for simple 3-DOF point-based haptic interaction because of missing torque feedback. In this work, we present a system involving sensory substitution and pseudo-haptic feedback that effectively simulate torque feedback using visuo-tactile cues. The proposed system was implemented into a 6DOF haptic rendering algorithm and tested on an under-a...

Evaluation of Pseudo-Haptic Interactions with Soft Objects in Virtual Environments

This paper proposes a pseudo-haptic feedback method conveying simulated soft surface stiffness information through a visual interface. The method exploits a combination of two feedback techniques, namely visual feedback of soft surface deformation and control of the indenter avatar speed, to convey stiffness information of a simulated surface of a soft object in virtual environments. The propos...

Design for Manufacture of a Low-Cost Haptic Degree-of-Freedom

Haptic technology enables systems to interact with the human’s sense of touch, and has been proposed for applications across a wide variety of domains. The cost prohibitive nature of most haptic devices however remains a contributing factor in preventing widespread real-world implementation. While some low-cost commercial-off-theshelf haptic devices have been introduced, they do not provide the...
